Six More U.S. Representatives
Co-Sponsor Mail Network Protection Act

(
04/30/08) Six more members of the U.S. House of Representatives have become co-sponsors of the Mail Network Protection Act (H.R. 4236) in support of the union’s efforts to reduce wasteful, inefficient, and detrimental subcontracting by requiring the U.S. Postal Service. The legislation would help preserve inexpensive, trustworthy mail service for the American public as well as USPS jobs by requiring the USPS to bargain with postal unions before it engages in significant contracting-out.

Rally to protest Lafayette post office closing

"
Up to a few weeks ago, the only reasons given by United States Postal Service officials for closing the branch had to do with security concerns, citing broken security cameras and a broken bulletproof glass door through which parcels are passed. But earlier this month, Darleen Reid, a USPS spokeswoman gave Jersey Journal columnist Earl Morgan an additional reason. "It's not official yet, but the paperwork is already in the works to permanently close the Lafayette Post Office because it doesn't make a profit and we are under a congressional mandate that post offices make a profit," Reid said." –

Sweeping Changes Debated for Landmark Family and Medical Leave Act

"
Under proposals being considered by the Labor Department, workers would have to tell their bosses in advance when they take nonemergency leave, instead of being able to wait until two days after they left. They would have to undergo "fitness-for-duty" evaluations if they took intermittent leave for medical reasons and wanted to return to physically demanding jobs. To prove that they had a "serious health condition," they would have to visit a health-care provider at least twice within a month of falling ill. What's more, employers would have the right to contact health-care providers who authorized leave."

Complaints of undelivered mail, poor service dog Rockaway post offices

"
Postal problems in the Rockaways are piling up like junk mail. Rep. Gregory Meeks is hosting a town hall meeting Friday to address growing dissatisfaction with mail service on the peninsula, and has invited U.S. Postal Service brass from Washington to listen to the complaints. "There is so much incompetence and lack of supervision" at the Far Rockaway post offices, said Meeks. "I'm hearing from a lot of seniors who don't get their Social Security checks on time. A lot of people aren't getting their bills."

Carrier Accused of Warning Customer About 'Mail Cover' Surveillance

"
Here's a good reason to remember your postal carrier at Christmas time. Apparently, he or she can tell you if the government is secretly monitoring your mail. Federal prosecutors in Detroit say letter carrier Darlene Cry illegally tipped off a postal customer that he was the subject of a "mail cover" -- a form of warrantless surveillance in which the envelope information on every card and letter received is secretly recorded by the Post Office, then passed to federal law enforcement or intelligence officials." –

APWU Testimony on Capitol Hill
Postal Reform Act Is No Endorsement of Privatization

(
05/09/08 The passage of the Postal Accountability and Enhancement Act in December 2006 did not change the fundamental mission of the Postal Service, an APWU leader testified on Capitol Hill, and should not be perceived as justification for privatizing the nation’s mail system or eliminating its obligation to provide service to all Americans. Nonetheless, APWU Legislative Director Myke Reid told a congressional panel on May 8, “As we meet here today, there is an active and ongoing effort to dismantle the Postal Service as we know it, to privatize it, and to turn its work over to for-profit companies.”
